MacKenzie Park hockey players in the spotlight

1 Jan

The annual NASC holiday tournament was a rousing success for the MacKenzie Park teams.

The bantam team had an awesome week which was capped off with a 3-1 win over Thornton Dundee in the A Championship. Great work boys! Here they are smiling for the camera

Parents and players can see incredible action photos of their teams at this site and order reprints too.

Happy New Year!

Oshawa council hikes user fees ahead of tough 2012 budget

21 Dec

Anger over $5-per-hour fee for youth teams to use sports fields

OSHAWA — Oshawa council is looking at increasing fees for a long list of City services including veterans’ graves in Union Cemetery and NASC sports.
If these fees go up one of my kids won’t be able to play next year. Which one should it be? — Melanie Hamlyn, NASC Soccer

OSHAWA — Oshawa council voted to raise user fees on everything from pet licences to cemetery graves at a tense meeting Wednesday night.

Politicians are wrestling with how to bring down a potential 4.3-per cent tax increase for 2012. A recent City report recommends increasing user fees to generate about $200,000 in extra revenue.

It’s an idea that is perennially unpopular with the public — and this time was no exception.

Officials with Oshawa NASC Soccer are furious after council voted to implement a $5-per-hour fee for kids’ teams to use outdoor sports fields.

Read the full Oshawa This Week story here

Examples of fee increases

- New $5-per-hour fee for youth groups to use soccer fields and baseball diamonds

- Commissioner of Oaths increases from $20 to $25 (immediate)

- New $10 adoption fee for “miscellaneous pets” other than cats and dogs

- Lifetime pet licence for cat or dog that is spayed/neutered, vaccinated and chipped increases from $15 to $40 (immediate)

- Transfer of cat ownership increases from $65 to $85 (immediate)

- New non-refundable $75 business license application fee (immediate)

- Annual second-hand shop licence increases from $150 to $500 (immediate)

- Union cemetery graves increase from $1,093 to $1,180 for veterans and from $1,421 to $1,535 for adults (as of Jan. 1)

- Curb cut minimum charges increases from $165 to $175

MacKenzie Park parents and kids join fight to save Harman Park Arena

Hockey kids chant ‘let them speak’

outside Oshawa City Hall

Hot-button Harman Park Arena issue expected to be addressed in January

MacKenzie Park players participated in a giant ball hockey game at City Hall in November 2011.

Over 200,000 people go through building every year, where are you going to put them all? — Bob Babin, NASC chairman

OSHAWA — The sound of sticks slapping the pavement echoed off the walls of Oshawa City Hall Monday night as hundreds of kids played a game of ball hockey in the courtyard while their parents waved “Save Harman Park Arena” signs.

The rally drew more than 200 people, most of them players and parents affiliated with groups such Neighbourhood Association Sports Committee, Oshawa Church Hockey League and Oshawa Minor Hockey Association.

Fears that Harman Park Arena will be closed are back on the radar after a recent City report referenced “ice rationalization” as a way to pare down an estimated 4.3-per cent tax increase in 2012.

Harman Park stakeholders were not given an opportunity to speak at the Nov. 28 council meeting because the item was not on the agenda.

Going for a skate

4 Dec

Hockey players from several MacKenzie Park teams participated in the annual Rotary skate-a-thon. The players gathered pledges and were skating laps to raise money for their own organizations and the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood. December 4, 2011.

Help save Harman Park Arena

21 Mar

The City of Oshawa is planning to close Harman Park Arena, the home of NASC hockey, and we need your help!

Please sign the online petition at http://petitions.tigweb.org/naschockey and let the City of Oshawa know how you feel.

Don’t let them close Harman Park. The NASC hockey plans to be at the Oshawa City Council meeting when the matter will be discussed and explain why the arena is a vibrant part of our city and should be saved. An exact date hasn’t been established.

This is the same council that tacked on additional user fees for the soccer pitches and softball fields in Oshawa. This last second change means the NASC soccer and Softball associations need to come up with more than $15,000 each to cover the additional unannounced costs.

Let Oshawa Mayor John Henry know how you feel.

N.A.S.C. HOCKEY PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD – INTRODUCES PLAYER RATING SYSTEM

25 Feb

N.A.S.C. Hockey has passed the mandate to establish a player rating system for our league.

Starting this year for next season.

We have already been in discussions with other centres ( Pickering , Ajax , Whitby , etc.) and will begin in February, assembling the structure in which to implement a rating system for our association. We will be coordinating this effort with our coach mentors and team staff in all divisions.

This will be communicated to all coaches shortly as ALL players will be rated by the close of this hockey season.

The information captured will be entered into our league statistical database for future years and player ratings will be supported with our league statistics that we already have in place.

While it is our intention to respect the history of the league and have kids play where they live, by implementing a league wide rating system, starting next season, we can adopt a “best efforts” at balancing the level of competition across all divisions.

N.A.S.C. Hockey offers Juvenile (1991 and 1992). Players will play in our expanded Midget/Juvenile division.

Games will be once weekly on Thursday evenings at the Legends Centre.

Season cost will be only $450.00 for the entire 2010-2011 season.

Peewee hockey team goes to Leafs practice

1 Feb

The MacKenzie Park peewee hockey team boarded the GO train at 7:40 am on January 22nd to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs practice at the Air Canada Centre. The team was able to attend the practice free of charge because a parent on the team entered a contest and the MacPark boys won!
The players were able to sit in the lower bowl to take in the action. They watched the Leafs practice for an hour and then were surprised to see the Washington Capitals take the ice. All the stars, including Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Mike Green, participated in the game day skate.
Watching the NHL players seemed to have inspired the team to a victory and a first place finish in the regular season.

Glory Game for the Novice hockey team

25 Jan

It was a memorable night for the MacKenzie Park Mustangs Novice hockey team at the General Motors Centre.
The team of 7 and 8 year olds played a mini game between periods of the Oshawa Generals and Kingston Frontenacs game on January 22. The players even painted their hair red!
The pace was fast and furious. Nobody kept score but judging by the smiles everyone left the ice a winner.
Once off the ice, the team was visited by Oshawa Generals’ players Anton Zupancic and Josh Graves, who signed autographs and posed for photos with the players.
The team was very grateful to the Oshawa Generals for giving it the chance to skate in front of 5,000 fans. The parents and players were excited that coach Dave Cameron was able to arrange the big night for them!
Here are some photos from the big night.

MacKenzie Park Novice Hockey team strikes gold

10 Jan

It was a Christmas to remember for the MacKenzie Park hockey teams.

The MacKenzie Park Novice Hockey Team won the NASC Christmas Tournament B Championship with a convincing 6-0 victory over Southmead Maple Lodge Rocks.

The MacKenzie Park Atom team beat Kedron Yellow 5-1 and then lost won 3-0 to Baker Park and 4-2 to Clarington Power Workers.

The MacKenzie Park Peewee team won two out of three games and narrowly missed out on playing for a championship. Mac Park beat Northminster 5-2, Simcoe Street 4-0 and lost 4-2 to Newmarket despite outplaying them.

The Mac Park Bantam Mustangs beat King City 4-3, tied Clarington 1-1 and lost 8-0 to Ottawa to enjoy a sucessful tournament, too.

Back to the Novices: The team won three straight round -robin games to reach the B Final and very nearly qualified for the A championship. Regardless, the boys were excited to win on championship day on December 30. The Mustangs beat North Oshawa 3-1, Kedron Yellow 5-1 and Baker Park 8-0 for the chance to play Southmead in the final.

The coaching staff of Dave Cameron, Justin Wooton and trainer Bruce Froude were impressed by the hard work of the players but more importantly,  the fun the boys had playing at the Legends Centre.

Park Volunteers

Many thanks to all the volunteers who make all of the functions and sports throughout the year possible.

Volunteers are greatly appreciated to fill positions on the park executive or on the sports teams.

OSHAWA NASC HOCKEY LOOKING TO KEEP KIDS HEALTHY ON THE ICE

17 Nov

Oshawa N.A.S.C. Hockey has decided to take a proactive approach to the upcoming cold and flu season. After last years’ H1N1 scare, N.A.S.C. Hockey, has purchased 1,000 water bottles and will start distributing them to the most vulnerable age groups of 4/5 and 6 years old.

This new program will be in place for next three to four hockey seasons..

It is important to protect our youngest players who are seen as being most at risk for the transfer of colds and flu.

All N.A.S.C. Instructional 4/5 and “Super Six” coaches are asked to please visit the convenors’ room at Harman Park this Saturday to exchange their existing water bottles for these new ones.

This also includes our N.A.S.C. Falcons “Super Six” and “Super Novice”  York-Simcoe Select Loop teams as well.

It is important that kids be educated on the risk of transferring colds and flu and this is one small step in protecting our most prized asset, our kids.

NASC Hockey has started

6 Nov

The four MacKenzie Park Mustang hockey teams have hit the ice.

The Novice, Atom, Peewee and Bantam teams have all played at least two games already and are all off to good starts.

On Saturday, Nov. 6 will be Picture Day at Harman Park followed by games for the teams.

For more information on NASC hockey, visit www.naschockey.org.

MacKenzie Park hockey 2010-11

23 Sep

Our teams will need coaches, trainers and managers. Some positions have been filled but more volunteers are welcome.

Check back in the coming days for more details.

Harman Park Arena update

8 Sep

Oshawa city council won’t be making a decision about the status of Harman Park, home to most NASC hockey games, until after the upcoming municipal election.

This means the arena will remain open until the new council receives a report from City staff.

Earlier this year City staff presented several scenarios relating to the future of ice usage in Oshawa.

Here’s what the Oshawa This Week wrote last December when the issue was front and centre.

Let’s take care of our park

20 May

The City of Oshawa has been taking good care of the Mackenzie Park soccer pitch and ball diamond so that our children can enjoy games closer to home.

Please respect the park and dispose of your garbage properly.

The City has established a dog park in north Oshawa to allow dogs to run free. But while at Mackenzie Park we ask dog owners to please pick up after your dog. At least one owner does not poop and scoop and is making it look bad for other owners.

Welcome to MacKenzie Park, Oshawa

23 Feb

Here is the new-look MacKenzie Park Clubhouse in Oshawa website. We’re undergoing construction today but should be done within a couple of days.

MacKenzie Park established in 1968, is a neighbourhood Park that provides sports such as Softball, T-Ball, Soccer and Hockey to about 300 neighbourhood kids. The Park is a proud member of the Neighbourhood Association Sports Committee (N.A.S.C., Est.1948) and the Oshawa Central Council of Neighbourhood Associations (O.C.C.N.A., Est. 1946).  A special thanks goes out to all our members and executive whose efforts make our program a great success each year. The executive also organizes special events and fundraisers throughout the year to keep these programs available.
